The language of tape
Serious listening starts with the right information.
- Speed
- Common premium releases use 15 ips or 7½ ips. Playback speed must match the edition.
- Track format
- Quarter-inch, two-track stereo differs from four-track consumer formats and requires compatible heads.
- Equalisation
- IEC/CCIR and NAB are different playback curves. The machine must be configured accordingly.
- Provenance
- Collectors should understand the source, mastering path, licence and real-time duplication method.
